    Not really. "Auntie" is Oba(-chan/-san), with a short "ba", unlike the "baa" in Obaa(-chan/-san), "grandmother".

    Vowel length is important in Japanese, and easily distinguishable by native speakers, so they would almost never mistake "auntie" for "granny".

    Okay, auntie is 叔母, grandmother is 御婆, old hag is 婆あ. As you can see, there only grandmother and old hag have the same character here.
