Technically, if the battle starts at night, subs don't have the defence boost, so there shouldn't be a problem.

Though if he's doing a practice match... he'd have to go through a day battle first... plus Sendai didn't have depth charges it seems.

Which makes no sense by the way since most submarine attacks were conducted at night meaning that was really the time it was MOST likely for escorts to end up engaging them.

Unless the battle took place in a night node. But practice matches (PvP) are conducted on standard combat conditions.
