Some people put milk and sugar in tea here in the UK and I hear Russians serve jam with tea too, you still get the flavour its just...different

If you eat sweet only, your tongue gets numb to the taste. The bitterness of tea gives a point of reference to reset your palette so you can take another sweet bite as if it was your first.
