My last trip Monterey Bay, their restaurants uses paper straws.
Local resident here. Yeah, it's a fairly recent change applied very haphazardly. The only time I've actually received one was at the McDonald's by the beach on Del Monte. Worst paper straw ever. That location also has big touchscreens with credit card readers for ordering food now, presumably due to California's high minimum wage. I have seen the self-service kiosks before in Europe, but that's the first time I've seen them in the states.

Late, but those are everywhere, even in states with federal minimum as the minimum wage. Just Massive Corporation Things.
