Well, this explains why the Pokemon world is so into renewable energy.

The coal is alive and trying to burn it just makes it stronger.

Considering as the joke is basically that Pokemon are just smashing parts from two similar animals (or some elemental theme onto an animal), and adding googly eyes, the sheer number of permutations on even a lazy idea like that will keep them in business for millennia.
