I guess its common in Japanese to abbreviate things by the first letter syllables? I notice that a lot, and then feel really dim when its obvious what it means.

Well, not always. I think the use of TKO and ATG (for Atago) still isn't as common as KTKM. I mean, CV Hime is nicknamed BBA (Babaa) instead, sometimes affectionately.
