You wanna work on a battleship with that pathetic voice!? A meme originating from a scene in the 1969 Japanese war movie Ah! Kaigun! (The US 1970 release renamed it to Gateway to Glory). Mokou is cosplaying Sgt. Morishita in the film. In said scene, the new cadets of Etajima Naval Academy are introducing themselves under the instruction of Sgt. Morishita. When they are talking, their seniors are intentionally making noises and making their self-introductions hard to hear, resulting in Sgt. Morishita shouting this phrase to them. The new cadets must yell at the top of their lungs to make themselves heard, only then will Sgt. Morishita praise them for being "full of spirit." The film was first introduced in China in 1970, and it was seen as a sign of the revival of long-loathed Japanese militarism. Thus, it was dubbed for the purpose of analysis and criticism, and remained mainly for internal use. It was made accessible to the public in the 1980s, but the meme only went viral recently. The reasons behind this mysterious surge of viral film-related memes have been fodder for countless Sinophobic tabloid writers, and the Japanese are utterly baffled by the sudden increase of Chinese interest in this old, not-very-popular film. In reality, it was simply because the dubbing made this already boisterous scene even more flamboyant, even downright hilarious. Nearly all memetic representations of this film focus on this scene only; the rest of the film is barely even mentioned.
