More like the cigsrettes were always a nod to Old Snake's badassery, being that he still kicked ass being a smoker with the item sapping his health points. Also, his decision to quit smoking at the end of the game signifies that MGS4 is truly the last chapter of Solid Snake's badass streak/story. As well as that crap Otacon was saying about being a witness to Snake's final days living in peace, so he could pass on his story to others. That's just good writing, somewhat.
