These look like Vietnamese guerilla fighters, and the text vaguely looks Vietnamese, but I can't quite figure out what it means.

    Clearly it's an underground resistance.

i'll remove the viet cong tag because it's a derogatory term for national liberation front for south vietnam. i'm not sure if vietnamese want to call their countrymen like that. if there's a shorter or more accurate term please do so and correct me. added guerrilla instead.

Yes, “viet cong” is a term used by the South Vietnam and American soldiers to address North Vietnam freedom fighters in an insulting way. And you sir, hats off to you for having such a profound understanding of Vietnam’s history and culture.

    Tiên vê Sài Gòn!
It's a damn shame that people forget their history so fast.
Also, this guy's art is full of win and weirdness. And this is his best piece so far, IMHO.

I honestly thought "Viet Cong" was the resistance's official name and not meant as an insult. Can I ask wherein the insult lies? I am curious.

Officially they've got some 40-character long name, which is typically shortened to (the shockingly generic) National Liberation Front, or NLF.

Veit Cong is a contraction of Viet Nam Cong-San, or Vietnamese Communist. It's what pretty much everyone in the west calls the terrorist/rebel/guerrilla/whatever groups that operated in the south during the Vietnam War.

Viet Gian Cong-San on the other hand translates to Communist Traitor to Vietnam.

"Viet Cong" was the what the South Vietnam and the Americans called the resistance.
" Viet Gian" was what the resistance called the Vietnamese who supported the American.

Ahh, so "xông" literally means "deep" but then also means "underground"... Then "lên" means to rise.

This thread is full of win.

No, "xông" doesn't mean "deep" or "underground", its actually close to "Move", while "lên" is "forward", and yes, "lên" is also "rise" but the meaning here is "Move forward" or "Charge!", not "rise from underground"

"Xông" can be translated as "Rush", and "Lên", "Forward" (in this case anyway; the word also means: [adv.] Up / On / Onto / On top of / Over; [v.] Get on / Step up / Climb up /...). Since phrasal verbs in Vietnamese are considered single words, "Xông lên" better means "Advance"; or in the middle of a battle, "Forward!". (But the word itself is not related to "tunnel" or "underground" despite the appearance of SA characters and the use of underground tunnels by Vietnamese soldiers). Yeah, long lecture is long. And thank you, ghostrigger, for your positive act of correcting the tag.

The Vietcong were out of the war after 1968, they never kicked anyone's asses.

It's not racist, it's anticommunist. Reinserted the tag.
