We defend an image because there is nothing wrong with it and someone is suddenly disapproving of the image. And honestly, many fans of the show do tolerate people who don't like it, you just decide to look at the negative and make fun of an entire fanbase for it.

It's not what you say, but how you say and go about it. These pictures are mostly harmless works that combine to relatively popular series into one another (which isn't anything new). Just like how some FIM fans (I feel that "brony" is a dumb word.) get defensive when someone attacks their show for whatever reason, there are some non fans that get very riled up at the mere sight of a Pony-styled character in a harmless setting.
