How do these periods work anyway? I thought they ended when the current emperor dies?

For the first time, hes abdicating! New name is being announced April 1st, and the Prince ascends on May 1st - upon which the new era starts with 〇〇元年.

That's been the case since Meiji Restoration and this is the first abdication since then, but before then the period would be changed without even changing the emperor. Aside from death, the period would be changed because of political events or natural disasters or to ward off misfortune in some older cases.

On April 1st? Oh there will be a lot of jokes. I'm sure.

She's cosplaying as Keizō Obuchi, but it was Yoshihide Suga who announced that the Heisei period is going to end on April 30. Obuchi died from a stroke in 2000.
