Megatron is one of the most well-known villains of the Transformers franchise. He is the powerful and merciless leader of the antagonist faction, the evil Decepticons.
His original alternate mode is a grey and silver Walther P38handgun with several attachments. Due to changes in toy safety laws, contemporary versions of Megatron have had to design new alternate modes, usually having him become some sort of military vehicle such as a tank or helicopter. Modern incarnations, such as the live action movie, have had him become an 'alien' craft rather than an Earth-based vehicle.
Megatron's first G1 design was created by designer Ono Kojin for the Japanese Microchangetransformationrobottoy series in the early 80s.

Alternate Versions
Galvatron - the upgraded form Unicron gives to Megatron in the G1 movie, and the name used for his upgraded form in several later series as well. As Galvatron is sometimes depicted as a completely separate character, at times existing alongside Megatron, images of Galvatron alone should not be tagged as Megatron.
Megatron (Beast Wars) - The Predacon leader in Beast Wars, transforms into a tyrannosaurus rex. Despite sharing the same name as the original character, is a separate entity existing in a different time period from the original.
