You actually only lose if you panic and sell after the drop. The problem is a lot of people participating the past few years are new to the stock market and didn't know to always have large amounts of cash out of the market for these situations. Ironically right now is actually the perfect time to buy in, as you can get a wide selection for a very low investment.
